January 23, 2012 - "Ponder" This is one of two bank buildings that we photographed last week on our North Texas drive-about. We learned some history about the bank that we did not know. In the Bonnie and Clyde movie - "This turn-of-the-century bank building was used in the scene where Bonnie (Faye Dunaway) and Clyde (Warren Beatty) attempt their first bank robbery. When Clyde bursts through the door, the lonely teller informs him that the bank has failed and that there is no money" - http://www.watermelon-kid.com/history/dallas/features/bandc/bandc-movie.htm And then from Wikipedia - "Local legend holds that Bonnie and Clyde either robbed the Ponder State Bank, or attempted to rob it, only to discover it had gone broke the week before. However this is not listed in the Barrow Gang's activities. The robbery in question may have been committed by the less famous but more successful Eddie Bentz." Truth or legend, it was a fun discovery. The owner also invited us inside to snap a few photos.
January 24, 2012 - "Pilot Point Bank" Last week when our photo group shot at PIlot Point, Texas we were unaware of some of the towns history. "Built in 1896, the Farmers & Merchants Bank, with its Richardsonian Romanesque architecture, is a focal point of The Square. It closed during the depression and never reopened as a bank. This is possibly why Bonnie & Clyde were not able to rob it until the 1967 movie." - http://www.cityofpilotpoint.org/objects/Walking_Tour_Brochures_111209.pdf "This turn-of-the-century bank building was used in the scene where Bonnie (Faye Dunaway), Buck Barrow (Gene Hackman), and Clyde (Warren Beatty) burst into a busy bank and Clyde has to repeat loudly, "This is a stick-up!" before anyone takes notice. Meanwhile, C. W. Moss (Michael Pollard) - a composite of W. D. Jones and Henry Methvin - waits outside. This is also the scene where Clyde tells a farmer to keep the money he has in his hand (inspired, obviously, by a similar incident that occurred during a real Barrow gang robbery in Lancaster, Texas) and Buck takes some sunglasses off the face of an elderly bank guard and tells him to take a good look, saying, "I'm Buck Barrow!"." - http://www.watermelon-kid.com/history/dallas/features/bandc/bandc-movie.htm
February 1, 2012 - "Clark's Outpost" Our photo group recently traveled north of Dallas to take some photos and eat some BBQ. Clark's Outpost founded in 1974 is located in Tioga Texas, the birthplace of the legendary singing cowboy Gene Autry. It looks like the Outpost has the same decor from when it was founded in 1974. "According to Bon Appetit and Gourmet magazines, there's only one reason to go to Tioga: a mouth-watering meal at Clark's Outpost, where the brisket is slow cooked over hickory smoke for more than two days." - http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2000/08/03/sunday/main221434.shtml
