May 9, 2009 - "A Fleeting Siren in The Wildflowers" - (I had to brush up on my Greek mythology to learn about the "flowery" island)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Greek mythology, the Sirens (Greek singular: Σειρήν Seirēn; Greek plural: Σειρῆνες Seirēnes) were three dangerous bird-women, portrayed as seductresses, who lived on an island called Sirenum scopuli. In some later, rationalized traditions the literal geography of the "flowery" island of Anthemoessa, or Anthemusa,[1] is fixed: sometimes on Cape Pelorum and at others in the Sirenusian islands near Paestum or in Capreae.[2] All locations were surrounded by cliffs and rocks. Sailors who sailed near were compelled by the Sirens' enchanting music and voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast.

Another shot of the "siren" and additional sculptures added today are displayed at this gallery link

May 11, 2009 - "Wildflower Center Conclusion" - This collage will wrap up the photos of our visit to Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.
(that's me taking a shot at the Center)
Panoramic (7 shots) from tower. The worker in the middle is harvesting wildflower seeds. The two walking trails in the photo are described on the Centers website as follows:

"The Savanna Meadow trails introduce you to the Balcones Canyonland ecoregion of the Central Texas Hill Country. The entrance to both trails is located behind the breezeway between the Library and the Administration Building.

The Savanna Meadow Trail (1/2 mile). A savanna is a grassland graced with scattered trees and shrubs. Our trail takes you through wildflower meadow. You can take a side trip to a cave, where, over thousands of years, the soluble limestone slowly eroded, creating this cave. Water flowing through the cave filters into the Edwards Aquifer, a major source of water for the region. (For your safety, do not enter the cave.)

The Woodland Trail (1/4 mile) connects to the Savanna Meadow Trail. It is lined with many common Hill Country woodland species, including pecans, elms and three species of oak-- post oak, red oak and live oak."

May 6, 2009 - "Wildflower Center Structure" - In keeping with the Texas historical architecture theme of the center, this photo includes the galvanized steel administrative building and the stone observation tower. Also notice, how an aqueduct collects rain water from the observation tower.

A panoramic view from the tower with a couple other shots are in another gallery at
